A Special Workplace
February 02, 2007It's now over two years that I have been living in London. And it is becoming almost two years I have been working in one of the most exciting but also most demanding places I know: The City of London. It's a very special place where you can experience nearly everything you will experience in your life. But here you can feel it, you can live it and you can see it. It's not just real it's reality. If you work in The City you cannot hide from it, you are just exposed to all these things without any hesitation and consideration.
The City is a place on its own, it's a place for work and living, of happiness and sadness, greediness and excess. It's a place for fun and pain, disparity, love, peace and hate. A place for fast food and organic food and poisoning. It's a superficial place of polite and rude figures. It's a place where wealth meets poor and people are divided into classes doing their duties and services. It's a dog eats dog place full with beauty and ugliness. Mates meet enemies. The City is also a place of inequality, it's hard and rough and tough. But it is also exciting and full with history and secrets, hidden places where you may hide away from all for a few seconds. It's full with hopes and arrogance, you can sense the desperate feelings of others, see the opportunities and lost chances. It's a place where profits are rewarded and losses are made but not accepted or forgiven. It's full of diversity but also uniformity. It's colourful and grey, dark and sunny, filled with sleaze and disease. It's small and mysterious, crowded but still empty. Hot but still cold. Cheap but expensive. Full with extravagance and carelessness. A place of politeness and correctness but also disrespect and disgrace. But it's also a place for inspiration. After all it's just one square mile.
But then in the middle of all this you realise there is someone feeling and thinking the same way as you. Someone you can talk to and trust. Someone you can see and feel. Someone you experience and who is out there with you and fighting together with you. The City is a great place with all its ups and downs, but it demands a lot from its habitants. It's a place not to be alone in. It's the almighty City of London, small but so powerful over everything, including me and the handful of people who are out there with me, who I like, respect, appreciate, care about and I am there for. That are the people that make it worth being there and give The City a human touch. Thank you. Gracias guapo.
